Apple has hit pause on its “Apple Intelligence” feature after it consistently failed to accurately summarize breaking news alerts. An upcoming iOS 18.3 update will disable the summaries for news and entertainment apps, according to a report by the Washington Post’s Geoffrey Fowler.

This admission of failure is unusual for Apple, highlighting the severity of the situation. For over a month, the feature has been misreporting news from real publications to millions of users. Recently, a notification botched the facts in a summary about Donald Trump’s defense secretary nominee Pete Hegseth.

Geoffrey Fowler criticized Apple for not disabling the feature until it improves its accuracy. This move by Apple reflects the challenges faced by large language model-based products, such as “hallucinations” in AI technology.

Despite the setbacks, Apple has not completely abandoned the feature and intends to reintroduce it with improvements. In the past, the BBC lodged a complaint against Apple for inaccuracies in news summaries, including a false statement about a suspect in a murder case.

Other tech giants like Google and OpenAI have also struggled with similar issues in their AI products. The pressure from users and media outlets seems to have prompted Apple to reevaluate its approach.

It’s clear that perfecting AI technology is a complex and ongoing challenge for companies in the tech industry. The need for accuracy and reliability in AI-driven features remains a top priority for companies like Apple.
