Parkinson’s Turned Jimmy Choi into a Ninja Warrior

At 48 years old, Jimmy Choi has achieved incredible feats despite battling early-onset Parkinson’s Disease. With 16 marathons under his belt, three Guinness world records (including one for double-high-five pushups), and seven appearances on American Ninja Warrior, Choi is a true inspiration.

Choi’s journey from shame to celebrity began eight years after his diagnosis when he weighed 250 lbs. and had to rely on a cane. A life-changing moment came when he fell down the stairs while carrying his 10-month-old son, Mason. Determined to find a cure, Choi participated in numerous clinical trials, eventually discovering the benefits of exercise. Starting with small steps, he gradually progressed from walking short distances to running.

In 2012, Choi competed in the Chicago Marathon, marking a pivotal moment in his life. Embracing his illness publicly for the first time, Choi’s daughter Karina, a fan of American Ninja Warrior, convinced him to compete on the show. Incorporating plyometrics and calisthenics into his workouts, Choi has since appeared on the show seven times and will be competing alongside his daughter in the 2025 season.

Fitness and family are Choi’s top priorities, and he emphasizes the importance of quality over quantity in his workouts. By monitoring his heart rate and aiming for 45 minutes of intense exercise at 150 bpm or higher, Choi has seen a significant reduction in his medication intake. Through exercise and proper nutrition, he has learned to maximize the benefits of his medication.

Training for American Ninja Warrior has not only improved Choi’s physical abilities but has also enhanced his everyday life by sharpening his muscle memory and spatial awareness. Choi stresses the importance of finding an exercise routine that is enjoyable and sustainable, as consistency is key to long-term success.

Choi’s story is a testament to the transformative power of perseverance, determination, and the unwavering support of loved ones. As he continues to defy the odds and inspire others, Choi’s journey serves as a beacon of hope for those facing similar challenges.
