Have you ever wondered how generous people really are? A recent study suggests that most people are willing to give up something they want in order to appear generous to others.
Imagine this scenario: you and a friend from the PTA both spot a prime parking spot at the mall at the same time. You both have an equal claim to the spot, but there’s also another spot farther away. What would you do? According to a study in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, offering the other person the choice of which spot to take can lead them to give up the better spot to you, thinking you’re generous.
Researchers at the University of Chicago conducted several studies to explore how people make decisions when faced with sacrificing something material for the sake of their reputation. In one study involving 300 online volunteers, the majority of participants chose to let the other person make the decision when it came to distributing items of unequal value between themselves and a friend. This act of abdicating decisions was seen as a gesture of generosity, prompting reciprocal generosity in return.
The researchers found that this tendency to abdicate decisions in favor of appearing generous was observed not only among friends but also among strangers. In fact, participants were more likely to give up valuable items when told that the decision had been abdicated to them by the other person. This behavior was consistent in both imaginary scenarios and real-world tests involving gift cards of varying amounts.
In conclusion, the researchers noted that abdicating decisions can have multiple benefits, as it not only creates a perception of generosity but also often results in the abdicator receiving the larger share of the reward. So, it seems that being nice and willing to give up something for others can truly pay off in the end.
