To Los Angeles, With Love

In a world that often feels divided, it’s truly heartwarming to witness the incredible outpouring of love happening right now. Every time I scroll through social media, I find myself moved to tears—whether from the overwhelming sadness of current events or the joy of seeing someone receive the help they desperately need. Despite all the challenges we face, it’s truly beautiful to see people coming together in solidarity.

Andrew Fitzsimons, a renowned hairstylist and founder of Andrew Fitzsimons Hair, shared his experience of moving from New York to Los Angeles in 2017. He initially held onto the New Yorker’s pride in toughness and skepticism towards the seemingly carefree lives of Angelenos. However, upon arriving in LA, he discovered a vibrant city with a diverse range of experiences to offer. From the bustling downtown area to the serene beaches, Andrew found that he could tailor his life to his liking in Los Angeles. He also found a sense of community, particularly among fellow immigrants like himself. Together with his friend Mariana Marroquin, an immigrant from Guatemala and director of the Trans Wellness Center, Andrew initiated a donation program for unused beauty and self-care items.

Andrew highlighted the crucial role of immigrants, especially the Latinx community, in California. Undocumented immigrants form the backbone of the state, working in essential industries such as agriculture and food production. Despite facing immense challenges, they continue to contribute to the prosperity of America. Organizations like the 805UndocuFund provide support and resources to undocumented individuals during these difficult times.

Reflecting on Los Angeles as the entertainment capital of the world, Andrew echoed RuPaul’s sentiment that “Hollywood is an idea, not a real place.” He embraced the city’s unique blend of joy, wonder, escapism, and fantasy, proudly declaring himself as one of the “weirdos” who call it home.

Amy Liu, founder of Tower 28, shared her deep connection to Los Angeles, where she has lived for most of her life. Eight years ago, she and her family purchased their first home in the Pacific Palisades, which she lovingly renovated to create a personalized space for her family. Surrounded by a supportive community and cherished connections, Amy found a sense of belonging and fulfillment in Los Angeles.
