Tour of Algarve’s opening stage is scrapped after peloton goes wrong way | Cycling

The first stage of the Tour of Algarve turned into a frenzy on Wednesday as confusion reigned and chaos ensued. Just before the finish line, a major blunder led most of the peloton down the wrong road, forcing race organisers to ultimately scrap the results.

As the riders approached a roundabout near the home stretch, the lead car mistakenly veered off course, causing the majority of the pack to follow suit. Spectators were left bewildered as they witnessed two different races unfolding before them.

In a twist of fate, Italy’s Filippo Ganna capitalized on the chaos and cruised to what seemed like an effortless sprint victory. However, his celebration was short-lived as no official winner was declared, and the podium in Lagos remained empty. The grueling 192.2km journey from Portimão ended in disappointment for all involved.

In a statement, race organisers explained, “On the approach to the finish line in Lagos, the peloton became divided, with a large number of riders making a wrong turn and missing the correct route.” The College of Commissaires made the difficult decision to nullify the stage results, citing a lack of sporting integrity in the chaotic finale.

Looking ahead, the peloton will embark on the second stage on Thursday, with the clock reset to zero. It’s a fresh start for all riders as they aim to put the tumultuous opening stage behind them and focus on the challenges that lie ahead.
